Disney India Needs to Look Down at the Ground Posted on: 25 May 2014 at 16:11 | Author: Chandan Mandal | Category: Other I often come to read interview articles of the owners of Disney India network and there are situations when I don’t agree with their statements at all. Today I am going to point-out few of them according to my opinions. Many people could be agreeing with me but before I start I would say that, these are my very personal views. Highlighted texts are the statements made by the officials sitting at the top positions on the Disney India company. “Disney channel is both kid-centric and family-inclusive channel because it not only has animation, but also live action original productions which appeal to the entire family.” Yes! We do know about your “Family Channel” thing, where you broadcast shows which are not at all made for Indian families. You re-make American shows to fit into Indian aspects, but you fail. What else do you offer except low quality, always criticized, dumb looking remakes of the popular American shows? I didn’t know that a channel showing Doraemon almost the entire day can be called a family channel. “Disney Junior, is for kids aged two to seven years, Hungama appeals to kids in the age group of four-14 and Disney XD serves the boys and their passions.” Oh I didn’t understand your statement dear, since I know Doraemon is on Disney Channel and on Hungama Channel most of the time and you call Disney Junior for young viewers? Think again! “The whole idea for re-versions and adaptations of American shows is to see how to take these stories cushioned in Indian values where our target audience in India will find it truly engaging.” And how to do you make “these stories” fit in Indian values? By calling your boyfriend as “Khas-Dost” or going on a date without calling it a date or eliminating kisses with some embracing acts or just remixing certain American customs with some Indian curry and here you go! You failed… “We have been continuously connecting with the consumers.” Oh yes! This is why they don’t reply to our emails or phone calls and not even to our messages on facebook sent to them in many years by many people. “Research and feedback have shown us that the channel is a happy place to be for people.” You are looking to the buildings at sky high, standing inside a pool of mud! When those people gave you the research papers, they only brought you the cleaner sides but look to the actual feedbacks from your genuine viewers and then you would know why your research is ending with in a few pages. “I don’t think there is any low point because the television industry in India is doing phenomenally well and we are growing in double digits.” You are growing in double digits and earning in multiple digits we all can sense that already. And this is why you are laying off your employees from many years. You have so fewer employees left with you now that your channel operation is failing. I have not seen a program starting on-time in 3 years. What More? We conclude that officials at Disney India are deaf and become dumb when it comes to reply a bitter question session. They don’t even realise that in past many years, they have lost most of their genuine viewers. We will be bringing more such stories after talking to the true Disney fans like you.
